dont get me wrong here guys..... but telstra does get the rough end of the stick.
Sold off by the government, heavily regulated by its old owner, and held back by out of date anti competition rules.
Read carefully all that is contained within that page, determine where the info is coming from and come to a decision.
Internode, IInet and Optus are all competition to Telstra, and Telstra is now a private company ( who's mission is to make its share holders money !! !! )
Im no huge fan of Telstra's, dont get me wrong, but I think the government is to blame for the lack of internet infrustructure in Australia. Will be interesting to see how the opel scheme shapes up !
What is T4?
T4 is an initiative of Australia’s top telecommunications and internet companies committed to fair competition and honest debate in the telecommunication sector.
T4 aims to:
Create an environment where there is fair competition for investment and customers
Provide better and more affordable telecommunications services to all Australians
Generate an honest debate around the state of telecommunications in Australia
Help MPs, regulators and members of the public gather the facts on broadband and telecommunications regulation in Australia
1st Point reads : where the competition can get more of an edge on Telstra even though not maintaining its network, looking after its shareholders or being run by its own management
2nd Point reads : where the competition can get, via government assistance, a reduced rate on a service provided by Telstra, at a cost that the competition feels is fair
3rd Point reads : GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT MORE ABOUT SELLING THE INFRASTRUCTURE BEFORE THEY JUST WENT AND DID IT !
4th Point reads : Where the competition can whinge at the MP's, try and get Telstra to spend the extra monies on the exchanges so all of the Internet providers can offer ADSL / Cable / 3G network coverage to customers.
I dont mind cheaper internet, faster internet.... hell even more reliable internet for Australia, however bashing Telstra for it isnt the answer. The government is to blame for what has happened in this country internet wise....... they screwed us over to make money.... simple. More forward planning and wiser money spent on the infrastructure would have secured Australia's future in the data industry.... instead we sold the lot. You cant sell a car, then give the driver the rules on how to drive it....... it sucks I know, but man......... you cant have it all !!
*end rant
* prepares for flame !!

I agree that the government started the crappy situation we find ourselves in, but Telstra is not doing themselves any favors. I don't mind them making a profit for their shareholders. But they announce record profits and then cry poor when the ACCC regulates their charges??
I like Internode's "Fibre to the toilet" article as an interesting illustration of the problems going on in the australian communications sector. Sure they are a company in the business to make money too, but it seems too fantastic a claim to make that they would put up millions of dollars of infrastructure just to have a dig at Telstra. It's a bit like QANTAS wanting to charge the Flightcentre the cost of an Aircraft to get a couple of seats on their plane!
We had spent 12 months and millions of dollars creating a new long haul microwave backbone to Tintinara from Adelaide, quite simply because the Telstra charges for intra-state bandwidth were too high to make them viable for broadband use.
And yet there in the corner of this old building, in the middle of nowhere, was the Telstra optical fibre, coming into the building and plugged into that switchgear in the toilet.
Fibre-To-The–Toilet:
This optical fibre was capable of carrying all of the phone calls in Australia, at once, as Telstra brochures used to cheerily remind us in the 1980s.
Or in modern terms, tens of gigabits per second of data traffic.
And there it was, servicing a tiny a township with a few hundred people and a Remote Switching Stage in the loo.
