Been shopping around for some D-SLR's lately, with all the discussion I have had I am leaning slightly towards Nikon as being my path of choice.

Searching further I came across the new release due out in November 2007

check out the specs on this baby ! :)

Looks like a good choice. Most professionals use either Canon or Nikon. How long have you been in photography? Mid-range SLR sounds good if you've been doing it a while. If you're looking to build up a lens collection and you're relatively new to photography I'd recommend getting an entry level SLR to save money for lenses.

When I bought my Canon 350D I was looking at the pro SLRs and they were like $6000 for the body alone! I don't know about you but I'm not that rich, haha.

Ive only just really started since the guys over at www.grandinferno.com (http://www.grandinferno.com) started posting some of their pics ! Talk about inspiration :) Plus inferno writes good tutorials so it opened my eyes to what you can do.

Ausmosis's shots here too have been very inspirational.

lol not rich here either - I am going to be saving quite a few months yet before I can join the ranks of the D-SLR crowd :)

In that case, plenty of time to practise with the camera you've got. You've probably noticed that a lot of the SLR functions (e.g. aperture, white balance etc) can be customized in a point-and-shoot too.

You'll find that as soon as new models are released, the older ones drop in price pretty dramatically, and there usually isn't much difference between models to justify to price drop either. So, if you're really tight on money or you just can't wait, get the next model down. I should add that Canon have a larger range in lenses, too.

Auki,

The D300 on paper looks damn impressive, it's a Canon killer imho (if it lives up to the hype). I'm keen to see what it can really do, for me to change over will be a little painful, I've got a fair bit of money invested in Canon glass :p

If you're willing to spend the $$$ on a D300 then I think it's wise to wait until its release!

Cheers
William
