Message from NSW Ambulance Service:

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than if we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as "ICE".

Please forward this.

It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.

While this may or may sound like a good idea in principle and further to the discussion of it at SNOPES: http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/icephone.asp

The major issue I can see with this is that if you use the pin locking feature of your phone it makes this concept rather pointless. And the reverse of this is that if you don't lock your phone, what's to stop someone other than the Paramedics stealing your phone and using it for their own purposes (and racking up a huge phonebill at your expense)

My advice is to protect your personal data, and let the authorities resolve your emergency contacts through all the existing mechanisims at their disposal.

We could always push the government for Identity Cards ;) http://eclectech.co.uk/clarkeidcards.php

This is one I find intensely interesting. Mainly because I think it lies somewhere between the Myth and Real fields. It started off as your standard email flood campaign, but it took on a life of it's own.
It is for a good cause, and doesn't require anyone to do anything drastic. I think the most amazing thing about it is the fact that it has now been adopted as a good idea by several ambulance services. There are also companies now that sell stickers that you can put onto your phone!
I think this is a case of a myth becoming a reality, literally because it does have a use in society.

Sites you can see this on are:

However, there have been a few scams associated with the ICE email. Most of them ask you to sign up an account on your mobile via PAYG.
