Apparently these are called Pistia Stratiotes or Water Lettuce, Invasive species in some places.

Salvina - has destroyed much of the Finnis River and clogs waterways all through NSW. Was imported as a Pond Plant and released into the wild. Hmmmmm insert bad words here.
