I'm trying to change the colour of these flames to blue. I have tried using the colour balance and hue/saturation controls in photoshop, and sure enough the flames turned blue. However, they did not exhibit a variation in hues like the original flames did. E.g. where the original flames have yellow, orange and red, I want the blue flames to have a tinge of purple or cyan. Currently, they only have shades of blue.

I think because red and blue are such different colours, I'm not going to get much hue variation anyway. I still want it though!

You could try using an adjustment layer, solid colour. Then set it's blending mode to either colour or hue.

Pipped by MaDrox!! ;)

That's what I would have done. Either that or use: Image > Adjustment > Channel Mixer. You'll probably have more control doing that, but you're also more likely to take ages getting a result!

I tried both of those techniques. The first resulted in a flat colour like I described and the second I just couldn't get the right colour with. I ended up using the magic wand to select the highlights and shadows separately and apply a slightly varied hue.
